I'm so happy to have found a forum for upholstery topics. I'm a one man show and usually do a small number of gym pads at a time but very high quality work and good materials. Not my main job but I may be focusing more on it.

I don't know much about bulk pricing but how would you guys go about charging or even formulating a quote for a whole gyms worth of pads? I don't know if I should try to classify the pads into separate categories i.e. 1 panel with boxing, 2 panels with boxing etc? There's so many different levels of time and work involved I wonder if one flat rate is even possible.

I'm assuming the material pricing without labor is price per square inch X number of square inches used per pad?

How would you price and quote a whole gym?

You must have some sort of idea of your material and labour for different size mats with your different construction methods? Now you have to break it down to price per square foot for each method and charge accordingly.

If you are trying to compete with overseas manufactures I’d find something else as you can not churn out product for the prices they can. I discount repeat (people or dealerships) that buy 10 or more units by 15%, although I feel this discount is small.... but allows me to maintain a profit which has to happen in a business.

My customers are happy enough with such a small discount that they keep coming back and the business is growing each year. My advise would be to make a decent profit with and without the discount. otherwise your chasing your tail.

Already your finished product has a higher $ value due to the good materials. Gym equipment has been recovered for years and years. I would get the customer to get a quote from a shop for a bench. That would give you an idea on one of the larger pieces then from there you can get an idea on pricing for the smaller pieces.

Can you please explain in more detail what these pads look like. Are you referring to all the seating on workout equipment or mats that you would see in a gymnastics gym??? Or something else.

Ya @John I tripped myself up thinking these mats were all the same size with different styles. I do parts off gym equipment, like seats, knee and elbow pads etc and just price each piece individually. Because no gym has never wanted all new pads I haven’t had to worry about discounts.

I'm not an expert by any means, but . . . the labor in upholstery seems to be very linear, so 'cheaper by the dozen' does not really apply. You may be able to save some on the material as the job lot increases, but your labor per item is going to stay fairly constant. So, in pricing, I would not give away the farm with a large order vs. a small order of same/similar items.
