My question is about if there is some way to stiffen an already tied set of springs? I have been working on an old settee that was in my parents basement since 1962 or so. There were companion single chairs that were recovered about the same time as this one went into storage. So far I have installed new webbing and tied all the original springs. It looks good but when I measure the height of someone sitting on the springs they are 2 inches shorter than when sitting on one of the matching chairs. How much height could I add to the chair with the padding? Is there some way to add some stiffness to the springs?

Are they coil or flat springs? If coil, you can roll foam and stuff it into the center then make sure the bottom is covered/tied to prevent the foam from pushing through. To make up 2" you could use a layer of high density foam on the bottom of the cushion then softer foam and batting on the top for comfort.
