Backing for Car Mats

This may be a stupid question, but I've looked around and can't seem to find an answer. I'm fixing to do some custom embroidered car floor mats. I was planning to probably use the Superflex carpet (mostly because I feel like it's going to be the easiest option for the embroidery), then with the carpet binding, but I feel like it all needs to be backed with some sort of rubber backing? What would one use for that? And where would one find it?

I think it’s called nibbed rubber, rubber backing. My local upholstery shop carries that and the rubber rectangles that go on top of the carpet where feet go. Are you near Phoenix? H&R Upholstry on 35th ave near I-10. They don’t have an online store but will ship if you call and tell them what you want. I don’t know of any suppliers online, I try to buy in person when I can (usually because I don’t know what I’m looking for is called or even existed until I find it :joy: :joy: :joy:
Good luck! Can’t wait to see finished photos! I’m debating on taking a risk and embroidering a go cart panel in a seat I’m working on. Thinking I don’t want to push my luck lol.

@Stiffchick ,

I have a feeling she is maybe in Canada? They do not have walk in upholstery suppiers up there. You pretty much order from a catalogue and take you chances on what you get. Thats what I remember anyways.

I made a set years ago by buying a set of cheap rubber mats at the store, cutting them to the desired dimensions and using them for the backing of my carpeted mats.

I'm not sure if the old style rubber matts are still around or not.

@John Long, I made the last set I did using the original mats that came with the car. They were an absolutely AWFUL pink and black zebra print, so I had no qualms pulling them apart and taking the back off them :joy:

THANK YOU! That's so helpful! It's amazing how much easier it is to find things when you know what it's called :joy: I found it online.

@BigRig, I'm in Alabama but I do EVERYTHING online.

Just in case anyone else needs to find this in future, apparently Albrights have it. I did look there, but obviously I wasn't using the correct search phrase. Nibbed Back Rubber Mat https://www.albrightssupply.com/nibbed- ... Click=3957
