Hey guys, where can I find the type of carpet that's used on the boxing of a center console seat? It's the part where carpet is used instead of the regular upholstery fabric because it's not really seen and it help with abrasion resistance from seat slide adjustment (I assume). It's nowhere near as thick as the floor carpet, but it's also not stretchy like speaker box carpet. The picture attached is the seat cushion I'm disassembling so you can see what I'm talking about.

BryanMartin,

I am also going to ask if this fabric is necessary to have, maybe it is just a cheap fabric that can be hidden so is sewn in there.

@bryanmartin It goes by a bunch of names. I call it needle punch carpet. Its also commonly called flex form , Super flex or trunk liner. Its usually available in 2 thicknesses. Hope this helps. You can find the stuff here of at most local suppliers

@BigRig In my opinion you would probably be fine with out it. I can see it being more necessary on fold down seats made with a vinyl or leather. The fabric will stick to itself and make it harder to fold the cushion up and down.

This is really good to know. I would hate to see a good job get torn up due to binding of vinyl against each other.

Thanks John. So would you say the main purpose in this application is to save money with less expensive material since it's mostly hidden? I'm using this old cover as a pattern, but making my covers out of leather.

Well its hard to say what the reasoning is behind it. When auto manufactures are making 1,000,000 of these covers decisions are made differently than you and I would. If they can save $.50 on each cover by doing that, they just saved half a million $. Or maybe this seat also comes in a vinyl and leather option and they didn't want to bother with 2 different patterns on the assembly line.

For your situation I would decide if there was a propose for using the carpet based off of how the seat operates. If there is no purpose for using it, then it doesn't make sense to buy even more material if you already have some that will look just as good or better.
