I remember many a moon ago when I first got interested in upolstery one was required to have a business license to be able to purchase some materials, in any of your experiences are there current vendors who require them that anyone knows of.
I have just noticed last week there is another upolstery forum and they require license for membership so that made me think that this may exist in the vendors as well.

Most businesses around me (Ontario, Canada) require a license for a wholesale account.

The two suppliers in my area only require a business name and contact info. At the most in the St.Paul MN area they may require a sales tax number.

We started out as a cash account at the distributor, then later setup an account. Some distributors require an account, but the amount of information required for the account varies. We have more issue with our ship to location than our ability to purchase materials.

Here you have to show a sewing income. I am fortunate however I question the wholesale prices sometimes.

I have found a few places to buy good quality materials that don't do wholesale accounts. But a lot of the places you may not see online will be wholesale only. Just depends on your area and where you buy from. Online has some but not a lot of wholesalers advertise online. If that all makes sense.

I have only came across one place that didn't want to set me up with an account because I don't have an official business, and this was a leather supplier. I can still order from them if they have something I like but I wouldn't get the good price on it. But the majority of my materials come from Albrights and sometimes Keystone Bros.

If I may ask what is it with your ship to location that causes issues?

I use a UPS Store for receiving, and sometime it is not considered commercial or residential. Some things can not be shipped unless it is a commercial address, other things can not be shipped unless it is a physical address.

Some vendors have different requirements to get an account. Ranging form a website,DBA, business license, resale license. So require just one, some require all and some require nothing at all.
Personally I think its silly when places have these requirements . Anyone with a social security # can usually get a resale license in one day. Then with the internet pretty much everything is available to anyone and the prices many times are about the same as my wholesale suppliers. The one benefit about having accounts at wholesale vendors is they supply you with free sample books.

Some places that dont require an account.
Albrights supply - They are my favovrite and I always shop there if they have what I need.
Miami corp
Perfect Fit Upholstery Supply
Brytech out of flordia

Its nice to have an account at Keyston bros but they require you have a resale license and business license. Those are very easy to obtain. Just look on your city's webside.

Hope this helps!
